This presentation, Analyzing Departure Brief Utilization in General Aviation, explores how General Aviation pilots, from students to ATP, utilize the Departure Briefing during flight training. The Departure Brief, a tool designed to enhance situational awareness and decision-making during critical phases of flight, is not commonly utilized in General Aviation operations.
Through a structured survey administered during the Summer and Fall of 2025, this study sought to determine how frequently it is used and the perceived value among students of varying certificate levels, experience, and training backgrounds. This project seeks to determine if a gap between the introduction of the DB in ground training and its consistent application in actual flight lessons may exist.
This presentation will discuss the implications for flight instructors, curriculum developers, and training organizations, with recommendations for integrating the DB more effectively throughout a student’s training journey. Attendees will gain insights into the best practices for standardizing a DB and fostering a culture where briefings are seen not as a checklist item, but as a foundational element of safe and intentional flight operations.
