Get Out of Jail Free? The History & Power Behind NASA Reports: Make CFIs Better & Safer

Despite being one of the most powerful tools for aviation safety and professional development, the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) remains underutilized— especially among General Aviation pilots and CFIs. After a decade spent advocating for broader awareness and proper use of NASA reports in the GA world, I’ve discovered a critical gap in how flight instructors engage with this vital resource.
Drawing from my experience in both airline operations—where submitting NASA reports is standard practice—and GA instruction—where mistrust and misunderstanding often prevent pilots from using them—I developed this presentation to empower CFIs to use NASA reports as both a protective measure and an instructional tool.
This presentation will:
- Provide a brief history of the ASRS program and its foundational purpose
- Explain how NASA reports can actually make CFIs better and safer instructors
- Showcase compelling, real-world NASA report examples that resonate with GA operations
- Clarify the five key criteria that define a valid NASA submission
- Offer step-by-step guidance on how to properly fill out and submit a report
- Encourage CFIs to integrate ASRS reports into their teaching and scenario-based training
- Conclude with audience Q&A and open discussion on cultural and practical barriers
Attendees will walk away with the confidence to use NASA reports—not just as a “get out of jail free” card—but as a proactive, preventive safety tool. This session is ideal for both new and seasoned instructors who want to sharpen their decision-making, foster trust with their students, and champion a culture of transparency and learning in the GA community.
