Maximizing the Power of Simulators: A Mindset Shift for General Aviation Instructors

As a major airline pilot and former USAF instructor pilot, I’ve spent countless hours in simulators across all phases of training. In the professional aviation world, simulators are indispensable for developing and maintaining pilot proficiency. They are deliberately used to reinforce skills, test decision-making, and practice abnormal scenarios in a way that is safe and efficient.

In general aviation, however, we often miss this opportunity. Too many instructors treat the simulator as if it were just an airplane on the ground, failing to leverage its true potential. The simulator is not a substitute airplane; it’s a unique instructional tool with distinct advantages—and limitations.

This presentation will challenge instructors to rethink how they use simulation in their training programs. We’ll explore proven strategies to maximize the simulator’s value: enhancing scenario-based training, improving emergency procedure instruction, and building student confidence and proficiency before ever stepping into the cockpit.

By shifting how we approach simulators, we can close the gap between professional and general aviation training—and produce safer, more capable pilots.
