Resilient Instruction: Stress, Mental Fitness, & Wellness Strategies for CFIs and Students

CFIs are essential mentors in aviation, not just for technique, but for mindset. This session explores how flight instructors can foster both student and personal mental wellness by integrating stress management and resilience-building into the training environment. Moving beyond crisis detection, the presentation focuses on what healthy mental fitness looks like, how CFIs can model it, and how to make it a part of everyday instruction.

We’ll cover key stress theories (Yerkes-Dodson, cognitive appraisal), the neuroscience of stress and learning, and simple strategies instructors can use to help students manage pressure, prepare mentally for checkrides, and bounce back from setbacks. Equally important, the session will address the unique stressors CFIs themselves face, from financial strain to burnout, and offer realistic approaches for protecting their own mental health.

With practical examples and evidence-based insights, attendees will walk away with tools to:

  •     Help students develop resilience, emotional awareness, and regulation
  •     Integrate brief wellness checks into pre-flight and debrief conversations
  •     Recognize and address their own stress patterns to sustain professional well-being

By modeling resilience and emotional fitness, CFIs strengthen not just individual students—but the safety culture of aviation itself.
