Why Student Pilots Quit: A Data-Driven Look at Flight Training Attrition

What drives people to become pilots—and what stops them along the way? In this presentation, we share findings from a survey of over 1,000 student pilots to uncover what really happens during Private Pilot training. From cost and scheduling conflicts to instructor turnover and aircraft maintenance, we examine the most common barriers that prevent students from completing their certificates. We also explore patterns in solo flight hours, simulator use, ground school preferences, and flight school satisfaction ratings.

Attendees will gain data-backed insights into which training environments set students up for success, what challenges most frequently derail progress, and how flight schools and instructors can better support the next generation of aviators. This session is ideal for CFIs, flight school administrators, and aviation educators looking to improve retention and training outcomes.
